New Delhi, May 4, 2025 – Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, emphasized the transformative potential of mediation in resolving disputes by addressing their root causes, distinguishing it from traditional court processes. Speaking at the launch of the Mediation Association of India (MAI), CJI Khanna highlighted mediation’s ability to foster amicable resolutions, reduce judicial backlog, and promote harmony between parties.“Courts often focus on legal outcomes, but mediation digs deeper to resolve the underlying issues, offering a more holistic approach,” CJI Khanna stated.

He praised the MAI for its mission to professionalize mediation in India, streamline dispute resolution, and make justice more accessible.The event, attended by legal luminaries, policymakers, and mediation experts, marked a significant step toward integrating mediation into India’s legal framework. The MAI aims to train mediators, set ethical standards, and raise awareness about mediation as an effective alternative to litigation.Justice Anjali Sharma, a key advocate for the initiative, noted, “Mediation empowers parties to craft their own solutions, preserving relationships and saving time and resources.” The association plans to collaborate with courts, legal institutions, and corporate entities to promote mediation nationwide.
