New Delhi, May 14, 2025 In a momentous occasion for the Indian judiciary, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai took the oath of office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) today. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and was presided over by the Hon’ble President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

Justice Gavai’s elevation to the highest judicial office marks a significant milestone in the nation’s legal history. He becomes the first Buddhist and only the second individual from the Dalit community to serve as the Chief Justice of India — a landmark development reflecting growing inclusivity within the Indian judiciary.

Justice Gavai succeeds Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who demitted office on May 13, 2025. Justice Gavai will hold the position of CJI until his scheduled retirement on November 23, 2025.

Born on November 24, 1960, Justice Gavai has had a distinguished legal and judicial career, having served on various constitutional benches and known for his balanced judgments and commitment to justice.
