April 26, 2025: In a recent address, Supreme Court Justice BR Gavai emphasized that merely granting rights to citizens is insufficient unless they are educated about these rights. Speaking at a legal awareness event, Justice Gavai highlighted that without awareness, citizens are unlikely to seek enforcement of their legal protections, rendering such rights ineffective.
“Rights enshrined in the Constitution and laws are only meaningful when people know they exist and understand how to exercise them,”
Justice Gavai stated. He urged for widespread legal literacy programs to empower individuals, particularly in marginalized communities, to demand justice and hold authorities accountable.
The remarks come in the context of ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between legal provisions and their practical implementation. Justice Gavai also stressed the judiciary’s role in ensuring accessible justice, calling for collaboration between courts, legal aid organizations, and civil society to promote awareness.
